Are you having a hard time instilling good oral hygiene habits in your child? If so, you’re not alone. Many people feel the same way. Fortunately, there are things you can do to make this a little easier, and our dentists, Dr. Tracey Tabor Williams & Amy Montefalco, are more than happy to give you those tips.
The first tip is to let your child pick their toothbrush. If they have a toothbrush they love, they will be more excited to brush their little chompers. Some kids like toothbrushes with their favorite cartoon characters on it while others like toothbrushes with their favorite superhero or princess. No matter which toothbrush your child uses, make sure they visit their “toothbrush friend” regularly.
The second tip is to make oral hygiene exciting. You can do this by turning on your child’s favorite song and encouraging them to dance while they scrub. There’s nothing wrong with having a little bit of fun while cleaning the smile! You can also make brushing a game by seeing how many bubbles your child can make with their toothpaste. The more they brush, the more bubbles will appear.
The third tip is to make it a team effort. Just grab your toothbrush and join in on the brushing excitement. You have to brush your teeth anyway, so why don’t you brush at the same time? This might even teach your child a thing or two about brushing because they will watch you scrub and try to mimic you.
